In Texas, where dozens of proposals attacking transgender people have already been pitched for the coming year, a hopeful sign has emerged nonetheless: The west Texas city of Odessa, notorious for adopting one of the most extreme anti-trans bathroom measures in the country, has now declared the ordinance unenforceable, a step taken after voters ousted the council members and mayor who had pushed it through.
The city’s bathroom ban came into full effect this fall, calling for “bounties” on supposed offenders and creating a right for private citizens to file suit against them.
Just weeks later, though, Odessa voters sent the mayor and three council members to defeat. The new mayor, Cal Hendrick, and the new council members, Craig Stoker, Eddie Mitchell, and Steve Thompson, have promised to revisit the ordinance in full.
Anytime bathrooms comes up you can guarantee its just conservatives fanning the flames of fear. I know we all know here, but its exhausting.
Im in the PNW. Want to know what trans bathrooms actually are? My favorite brewery, you go into the restroom area. In there are 10 completely closed in stalls on the left marked with a urinal symbol. On the right are 10 equal stalls marked with a toilet. Each stall is a fully enclosed “room” with a full size door that completely closes. At the entrance is one large communal sink, soap, and dryers on the edge.
Wild right? Complete privacy, but no one is left out, there is no uncomfortableness, people of any gender as it turns out can wash their hands right next to each other. Shocking.
In fact, i think its more safe than a conventional bathroom!
I suspect that in some cases it would even be cheaper for the businesses, having to run less plumbing and all. Bathrooms like that are a win for everyone.
Except politicians who rely on rage bait
Stop stop, I’m already sold, you don’t have to keep making it sound better.
Love that bathroom too (if it is the same spot). The first time I walked in, I was like fuck yeah, they did it right. The place I go to now only has 3 stalls, but they did the same idea, and it just makes thing so much simpler.
Stoup (previously optimism) capital hill!
Oh, I didn’t know Stoup moved into that spot. Been a long while since I was up there. Logan down in Burien is my Winchester now.
Yeah, so far it’s okay, but I’m still hesitant. I loved optimism. I’ll have to check yours out next time I’m down south
It’s super chill. Very nerd themed, cool owners, awesome beer tenders.
