I researched the hell out of these things for about a week before I ultimately decided I’d just scoop. Everyone we told we were getting 2 cats said we needed one.
After reading about the longevity and the maintenance I couldn’t justify the cost for something that will save me about 20 minutes a day.
For us it’s not just saving time; it’s preventing prissy cats from going somewhere we don’t want them to go because one of the others used the box and now it’s “too icky.” When the somewhere we don’t want is often the bed or even my pillow, it’s worth it.

That would definitely be a different consideration.
