in a case of fall even directly on top of the kitten on that pocket other bodyparts would absorb most of the force and the kitten would likely just flop a bit to the side thus not getting that much weight on them.
also have you ever met cats, they be quite squishy.
I would say in case of a fall the kitten would likely be the uninjured one
