That’s standard in the UK. Our justice system views rehabilitation as the ultimate goal, not punishment. They will serve this as a minimum, but will likely never see life outside of a cell based on their reaction to being sentenced.
Even after parole, their life will forever be scrutinised by law enforcement and medical examiners to determine their mental state. Anything that doesn’t scream “normal member of society” puts them back in jail.
Sadly, as economies crash, it takes years, if not decades to repair the damage. Quick fixes or radical changes often just make the problem worse.
It’s one of the reasons why Greece is starting to improve after so long in the shit. Their workforce switched to other, stable industries, and due to a mixture of COVID and the global economy dropping, they found themselves finding some semblance of normality.
All economies are different, but Argentina will need to strip away the bullshit, and focus on building something that’ll last, with the resources they have. Sadly (and probably rightly so), telling people that the formative years of their lives will be full of unemployment, crushing debt, and no savings to take them into retirement while their kids may have a better outcome isn’t a vote winner
Funny enough, an article came out after the Brexit vote called “The Sociology of Brexit”, where they detailed why people voted for it. It was basically because London is responsible for our entire economy, leading to large parts of the country having few jobs, no industry, and the government largely not giving a fuck. In their minds, things couldn’t get any worse, so they didn’t care that experts were saying “it’ll ruin the economy”, because the economy hasn’t helped them out at all.
Why I distinctly remember that article is because it predicted that the exact same thing was likely to happen in America, and that Trump would win the presidency. Usually, UK politics is a good 10-20 years behind America, but it’s something that translated directly across the atlantic.

I got downvoted hard for saying this before, but while I don’t think the UK would get all of it’s benefits back, I think that they would get to retain some privileges - at the cost of others.
It’s not because the UK is great or anything. The sole reason I believe the EU would welcome back the UK with open arms is to keep the UK as a friendly example of how badly your economy can fuck up after leaving. History shows that you don’t kick someone when they’re down, you bring them back, and form them into a useful ally.
IMO, the same deal wouldn’t make sense anyway, because the UK is far weaker than they were previously. Let the UK keep the pound, but lose any special veto rights they once had.
Coming close to my forties, but I’ll take the youth comment! It’s not a serious suggestion, but more of a discussion starter to how help could be given in instances where women want an education AND their families support them.
It’s kinda hard to agree with your point on the economy, given that one of the key drivers of the Brexit vote with pure apathy for the British economy and its reliance on funneling money through the financial sector.
While you’re not wrong, a lot of people voted on the belief that it didn’t matter if the economy went to shit, because “things are already shit”. Now, the poor are even poorer, and the damage will likely last generations.
True, under current laws women obviously can’t travel without a man present, so it would basically mean sending a full family over, or at the very least, a parent or partner with them.
My main point of highlighting it was that it’s not a small number of people, and that the young population of Afghanistan isn’t anywhere near as small as I thought. A remote education might help, as it’s something that women can access without having a man present.
My initial thought experiment on this was “could these girls migrate to the west on a visa to complete their studies and return?”, and then I went down the rabbit hole of the demographics of Afghanistan. Of a population of around 40m, 46% are under 15, which is mad! That’s potentially a lot of girls that will lose an education.
I wonder if a remote education could be the way forward? Let these girls study remotely online, assuming they have some form of internet access available, and create a worldwide visa that would allow any Afghan girl that can pass a standard entry exam to attend university. While we have no need to provide children from another country an education, this would probably be a low-cost solution, and one that I imagine many rich philanthropists would happily provide as a grant.
